Yes! This is a great start. I hope we can encourage everybody to keep providing feedback as we move forward with these standards…

Awesome forum guys.

When can we expect...

...a synopsis of progress/thoughts from Denver?  (I want video of Mark Peterson's rant!)

...a revised document?

Hi Ken.  Interestingly, we mostly discussed the standards process and areas where standards can make a difference rather than digging into the spec.  We're gathering feedback on the spec here that will be used to craft a new draft document in the April timeframe.

Cool.  I'm really interested in seeing the more details in the metadata spec.  As a content producer, I want to ensure that what I produce can be read and processed by production equipment.

Comment by Ed Lantz on February 18, 2012 at 9:06pm

Exactly - that is the purpose of the metadata. What came up after Mark's talk was the fact that it is easier to deliver compressed files that are a few GB large than 500 GB+ dome masters.  However the producer has to format and compress these files to scores of different formats.  Mark said that they would not deliver dome masters for security reasons...

...however doing splitting and encoding for multi-projector theaters places a nearly impossible burden on show producers who would need access to proprietary codecs and theater parameters. The Dome Master is still the preferred format accepted by festival operators... I think they are a litmus test for any standards or specifications.

Comment by Ken Scott on February 18, 2012 at 9:54pm

Is there a trusted third-party service that can take any dome master and do the venue-specific formatting...?

Comment by Ed Lantz on February 18, 2012 at 10:33pm
not yet... a fulldome service bureau would be great. we get a lot of requests for film conversions too...
