Filming for fulldome

Hi

I am a complete beginner to creating fulldome movies (not CGI) for eductional purposes, especially outreach events for science. To get me started, can you recommend the most straightforward method and equipment?

Hello Lis - I would recommend a couple of links to get you started.

http://imersa.org/ has a summit coming up that offers workshops in dome production

There is still not a lot out there about how to produce for fulldome, but much more than even just a couple of years ago. 

The easiest advice if you want live action for the dome is to purchase a prosumer or pro digital SLR camera (I use Canon rebels and a 5D) and a nice fisheye lens like the Sunex super fisheye. Point the camera up at a 25° to 30° angle and shoot. 

There are a lot of things to take into consideration. For example, how much light will be in the image. The dome bounces photons and can wash out your sweet spot image if you back and side images are too bright. 

You may also find it helpful to Google "fulldome production".
